Tulum is situated on the coast of the state of Quintana Roo, which is part of the Yucatan peninsula. A traveler gets to Tulum by starting in the not quite quaint city of Playa del Carmen. The ruins at Tulum are worth going through Playa, but I would not want to stay in the city for very long. Cozumel can be reached by ferry.
The first buildings of Tulum were created by the Mayas towards the end of the twelfth century. Tulum means fence, fortified wall, trench or stockade. It was given this name because of the fortified wall which ran around the city on three sides.

Some of the local people still perform the Mayan traditions.
